Environmental movements are becoming more lively and prominent than ever before, where the oceans continue to play a major role. New paths to sustainability are being initiated through the work of creators and founders, and at the same time scientific discoveries are revealing exciting insights into the ocean. Activism, innovation, education, and curiosity – it’s all there.
The ocean is already in Berlin. The only thing missing is the place where we may encounter all of this.
The place, in which organizations and start-ups can generate waves, where artists and researchers take the stage and everyone comes together who wants to read, hear or see something about the seas. A place where the ocean and marine conservation can be experienced – oceanhouse.
In the years ahead we want to assemble this oceanhouse, creating a work space and a common ground for ocean conservation in Berlin. At the same time, we aspire to open new doors for science and art to bring their fascination for the ocean to the public. And our Berliners shall have a platform from which they can witness the sea.
We are not founding a new NGO, umbrella organization or water sports group, but want to lead and combine the existing associations into one center venue. oceanhouse intends to strengthen, inspire and make the ocean sustainability movement more accessible to all, combining the community’s individual strengths and preserving its diversity. For the time being, oceanhouse is purely a vision, as it takes time for the foundations to set. But already now we want to spread the idea and involve various groups with campaigns, addressing the public every now and then.
In the meanwhile, we continue to refine our concept and strive to incorporate various contributors with backgrounds in science and ocean preservation to the project.
oceanhouse will be organized into five areas.
Among seat cushions, benches and couches is your space for exhibitions, podiums, concerts and films - adapted to each event, with seating arrangements extending from cozy to exciting.
Organizations and start-ups can merge ideas in a fusion of work spaces, workshop and studio to shape future ocean preservation - activist, smart and progressive.
In the same way children should get to know the oceanhouse and have something natural to play in a city with hot summers – water. And the ones too cool for the splash zone we'll take to the real beach!
A small zero waste Café that invites you to meet, share and relax. And party - as waste-free, bio, hand-made, and regional as possible.
For each of these five areas we are searching for experienced partners who will support and accompany us, perhaps even help shape the project.
This is Stephan and Luca, two activists roaming around Berlin and Hamburg to help on preserving the seas. The idea of oceanhouse came to us in Summer 2019, after we had gathered all kinds of initiatives on World Oceans Day to celebrate the day and the finale of our first non-profit film tour in Berlin.
The blueprint for our concept has grown more and more, while at the same time we noticed that this will probably break new ground. And so, we are simply going to start, remaining curious where the journey will take us. For our past environmental projects, this attitude has always worked out pretty well!
